So many animals suffer from factory farming, The unarguable truth, however, is that chickens endure the most widespread torture. 260 million male chicks are butchered every year because they have little economic value. Imagine millions of baby chicks getting sucked onto "kill plates" because their gender. Female chicks are debeaked with hot blades while fully conscious. 95% of egg laying hens live in crammed battery cages, in the cruelest way. When a hen does not meet the egg laying standard, they are starved for 2 weeks in a process known as "starve force molting".
Now here's what really bothers me. Chickens are exempt from the Humane Slaughter Act, so they are killed by electrocution, boiling and gas poisoning while they are totally cognizant. They can also be abused completely legally. Hens are raised to "market weight" by being fed hormones until their skeletons crumble under their own weight. They are killed at just 42 days old and although they are just chicks, their bodies have swollen to that of an adult.
Pigs are also tormented widely. Sows are forced in gestation crates where they wallow in their own filth, unable to move for the bars taht constrain them pierce their flesh. They cannot move and eventually, that causes insanity. Pigs are social animals and in the cold confines of a warehouse they exhibit abnormal behavior including biting their cages until their teeth shatter. They die in pain and nobody cares.
Cows are a source of both meat and dairy. However, both industries are corrupt and abusive in the factory farming world. Factory farmed cows live less than 5 years whereas a family farmed cow can live past 20 years. Within mere hours of birth calves are taken away from their mothers. Mothers who feel significant loss when their babies are ripped from their embrace. The process continues until slaughter.
